Volkswagen Group solid-state battery successfully passes durability assessment

Posted Date: 2024-01-18

Recently, PowerCo, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group that focuses on battery business, said that it has completed the first durability test of QuantumScape’s solid-state battery. The test results showed that after more than 1,000 charge and discharge cycle tests on the solid-state battery, the battery still maintained 95% of its maximum battery capacity, and its battery characteristics showed almost no degradation. It is understood that QuantumScape is an advanced battery technology company that has been committed to the development of electric vehicle batteries for many years. The Volkswagen Group has been QuantumScape's partner since its establishment and is also one of the company's investors. The Volkswagen Group will help QuantumScape continue to develop solid-state batteries and provide advanced solid-state battery technology to companies in the industry.

Frank BOLME, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PowerCo, said: “The solid-state battery durability test results are encouraging and confirm the development potential of solid-state batteries. This solid-state battery development technology may eventually bring us a vehicle that can achieve long-distance driving. , ultra-fast charging and virtually no aging. We firmly believe in solid-state battery technology and will continue to work with our partner QuantumScape to achieve mass production of solid-state batteries."

PowerCo stated that the current industry standard for solid-state battery durability testing requires that the maximum attenuation of battery capacity does not exceed 20% after 700 charging cycles. QuantumScape's solid-state batteries clearly exceeded that standard in the latest tests, and even exceeded other test standards in terms of the battery's fast charging capabilities, safety and self-discharge performance.

Jagdeep SINGH, founder and CEO of QuantumScape, commented on the test results and further explained the test results: "The anode-free solid-state lithium battery developed by QuantumScape has excellent performance. Although before bringing this technology to the market, We still have a lot of work to do, but after evaluating the performance of other automotive lithium batteries, we found that no lithium battery can still maintain such a high discharge energy under the same conditions and number of charge cycles. We We are pleased to be working closely with the Volkswagen Group and PowerCO to industrialize this technology and bring it to market as quickly as possible."

The Volkswagen Group stated that this test involved a solid-state battery unit composed of a 24-layer structure, and its technical specifications are consistent with the battery technical specifications currently produced by the group. In addition, the Volkswagen Group's next goal is to continue to improve the manufacturing process of solid-state batteries and lay the foundation for expanding the production scale of solid-state batteries in the future.
