What is the difference between semiconductor strain gauges and resistance wire strain gauges?

Semiconductor strain gauges and resistance wire strain gauges are two commonly used sensors for measuring strain. They have some differences in the principle, structure, performance, etc. of measuring strain.

First of all, semiconductor strain gauges use the properties of semiconductor materials to measure strain. It consists of two semiconductor materials sandwiched by a thin film, usually silicon. When external strain is applied, the resistance value of this silicon film will change, so the strain information can be obtained by measuring the change in resistance value. Semiconductor strain gauges are characterized by high precision, fast response, and strong anti-interference ability, and are suitable for strain measurement occasions with higher requirements. It has a wide range of applications, including engineering structure monitoring, aerospace, automotive industry, electronic equipment, etc.

In contrast, resistance wire strain gauges use changes in the resistance wire to measure strain. It is made of metal wire and has a certain elasticity. When external strain is applied, the resistance wire will deform, resulting in a change in resistance value. By measuring the change in resistance, the amount of strain can be determined. Resistance wire strain gauges are characterized by simplicity, stability, and relatively low cost. They are mainly used in some strain measurement situations with general accuracy requirements. It is widely used in industrial control, instrumentation and other fields.

In addition to the differences in principle and structure, there are also some differences in performance between semiconductor strain gauges and resistance wire strain gauges.

First of all, in terms of accuracy, the accuracy of semiconductor strain gauges is usually higher than that of resistance wire strain gauges. The measurement accuracy of semiconductor strain gauges can reach about 0.1%, while the accuracy of resistance wire strain gauges is usually about 1%.

Secondly, in terms of response speed, the response speed of semiconductor strain gauges is relatively fast, usually around the microsecond level. The response speed of resistance wire strain gauges is slower, usually around the millisecond level.

In addition, in terms of anti-interference ability, semiconductor strain gauges have stronger anti-interference ability than resistance wire strain gauges. Due to the high sensitivity and signal amplification capabilities of semiconductor materials, semiconductor strain gauges have a better inhibitory effect on interference signals in the sensor environment.

In general, semiconductor strain gauges are suitable for occasions where strain is accurately measured and have high requirements on response speed and anti-interference ability; while resistance wire strain gauges are suitable for strain measurement occasions where general accuracy is required and the cost is relatively low. When selecting strain gauges, the specific application needs determine which type of sensor to use.
